FLSmidth Installs World’s Largest Vertical Steel Tower Mill for Tier 1 Gold Mine

FLSmidth says it recently installed the world’s largest vertical steel tower mill with dual-purpose throughput for a Tier 1 North American gold miner. The FTM-4500 (FLSmidth Tower Mill) was delivered in less than 14 months from receipt of order in Q3 2020. The restless 4,500 horsepower steel mill has now been fully installed on site, and FLSmidth says it has received praise from the mine operator and site contractors for its quick and trouble-free installation.

The FTM-4500 is the largest vertical steel mill in the world and combines variable speed drive technology and a high efficiency TEAAC motor from ABB to drive two different mill throughputs. At full production capacity, the miner uses the FTM-4500 for fine crushing over 500 metric tons per hour. When operations occasionally need to reduce production, the FTM’s VFD allows adjustment of the agitator screw speed which, in combination with reduced media loading, results in up to a 45% reduction in mill throughput.

The release reads, “Born from our six-year partnership with a longtime Asian leader in mining and aggregates equipment, the FTM fuses proven, rugged crusher geometry with premium western drive components. It comes with full digital monitoring of critical components and operating parameters. Vertical tower mills have been proven to reduce energy consumption in tertiary grinding by up to 50% compared to traditional horizontal ball mills, making FTM the cornerstone of FLSmidth’s MissionZero product expansion. »

This FTM-4500 installation expands FLSmidth’s tower mill credentials in North America, well beyond several proven installations in Asia, where 500 and 1,500 hp mills are in service. Standard FTM sizes include 1000hp, 3500hp and soon to be 6700hp versions.
